EXTRA CREDIT FOR 2004
TO SAVE LIFE, GET INVOLVED, VERY QUICKLY!
Because of a radical 4-1 ruling by the Tennessee Supreme Court in 2000, Tennessee now boasts of a broader "right" to abortion than that recognized by Roe v Wade or the US Constitution. Basic commonsense protections passed by the Tennessee General Assembly were struck down as violating this newly discovered "right to abortion" within the Tennessee Constitution. The disastrous result in Tennessee is abortion on demand with: NO INFORMED CONSENT FOR WOMEN CONSIDERING ABORTION...NO 48 HOUR WAITING PERIOD...NO HOSPITALIZATION REQUIREMENT FOR SECOND TRIMESTER ABORTIONS... SJR (Senate Joint Resolution 127) calls for a statewide public vote on the question of abortion regulation in Tennessee. SJR 127 passed the state Senate in March by a vote of 23-6, has 54 co-sponsors in the Tennessee House but faces very strong pro-abortion opposition. For extra credit, contact by e-mail your state representative in the House support SJR 127 regardless of their personal support for abortion. You can access their e-mail addresses at Tennessee.gov. Make a copy of your e-mail and send it to me for a +5 extra credit. (American and Modern History classes)

Center of the Storm: Practicing Principled Leadership in Times of Crisis by Katherine Harris.
Katherine Harris was at the center of America's greatest electoral storm in 150 years-- the presidential election of 2000. As Florida's Secretary of State she had the crucial but unenviable task of deciding to either certify Florida's election results as that state's laws mandated or bend to political pressure to allow more recounts in the race between Governor George W. Bush and Vice-president Al Gore. She became the subject of jokes, lawsuits andd finally even death threats, but she stood her ground. Her book is the story of how she weathered the storm and found within herself the courage and principled leadership she did not know she had. Christians persecuted? In America? Open your eyes -- it's happening right now
Persecution -- that's the name for it. Tolerance might be the highest virtue in our popular culture, but it doesn't often extend to Christians these days.
Christians are increasingly being driven from public life, denied their First Amendment rights, and even actively discriminated against for their beliefs.
In this relentless exposé of political correctness run amok, best-selling author David Limbaugh rips apart the liberal hypocrisy that condones selective mistreatment of Christians in the mainstream media, Hollywood, our schools and universities, and throughout our public life.
In Persecution you'll enter the hotly contested battle for the soul of our public schools. Here are appalling -- but true -- stories of how anti-Christian social engineers not only prohibit school prayer and forbid students from wearing Christian symbols, like a simple cross, but even expunge the real story of Christianity in America from history textbooks. Worse still, in the name of "diversity," "tolerance," "multiculturalism," and "sex education," the social engineers actively inculcate hatred of Christianity as ignorant, repressive, and offensive. Not exactly the agenda of most parents whose tax dollars support the public schools.

"THE WAVE" : "The Wave" is a drama that powerfully re-creates a classroom experiment in which a high school teacher uses his class to form his own "Reich" to show why the German people could so willingly embrace Nazism. It raises critical questions about individualism and conformity: How can peer pressure usurp individual rights? When does dedication to the group cross the line from loyalty to fanaticism? This is an excellent program you can rent from Dr. Hagewood or buy your own copy. Be your own film critic and write a 2 page review. Worth a +3 (Modern History classes only)

SCIENCE GONE MAD! While Hitler's armies were feared, his use of Germany's world class medical and scientific community was even more fearsome. Check out the film "Nazi Medicine" from Dr. Hagewood and write a 2 page summary or 1 page typed for a +2; or check out "Science and the Swastika" from Dr. Hagewood and write a 5 page summary for a +7 credit (Modern History classes only)

The Soviet team in Czechmate began with an excellent foreign policy and made key adjustments during the simulation of the week of September 26, 1938, when 7 countries tried to prevent the Czech crisis from touching off World War II. World War II was not "prevented" this year, but the Soviet team left their country in good position to emerge on the winning side! From left are: Matt Webster as Josef Stalin, Jessica Hyne as Molotov, Stephanie Passons as Litvinov, and Gavin French as Field Marshal Voroshilov.
The British team reversed history--England did not cave in to German demands! However, they led their country into a war in 1938 that their people did not want and their nation was not really prepared for. From left: Betsy Brent as Lord Halifax, Jim Riley as Neville Chamberlain, and Lauren Nadeau as Sir Neville Henderson.

DID YOU KNOW? Professor Donald Lutz at the University of Houston counted 3, 154 citations in 15,000 writings of the Founding Fathers and found that approximately 1, 100 references are to the Bible and only 300 each to Montesquieu and Blackstone. Locke, Hume, and Plutarch followed at a considerable distance! Yes, there is an undeniable link between Christian faith and political freedom! This fact is from Michael Novak's On Two Wings: Humble Faith and Common Sense at the American Founding.
